Skittles is putting user-generated content at the centre of a new campaign for Mars confectionary brand Skittles. Created by TBWA\LONDON, the campaign will break on national TV on 15th July with 5 playful and entertaining executions that are centred on the 5 colours found in a packet of Skittles.
The campaign will simultaneously launch online with up to 24 further executions and invite teenagers to make their own Skittles animation through a partnership with social networking site Bebo www.bebo.com and a dedicated website www.goskittleyourself.com. Visitors to the site can submit their ideas, which will then be shortlisted before a winner is chosen by the public and given the chance for their idea to be shown on TV.
The animated spots put the product at the centre of the ads by using the various coloured Skittles to form entertaining and engaging black and white line-drawn characters.
In one execution, ‘Cowboy’, the scene resembles a frontier western town and features two Skittle cowboys approaching each other in classic gunfight mode. One has a green sweet for a torso, the other yellow. The yellow Skittle declares “Nobody calls me yella belly!” seconds before a procession of western figures cross the screen in succession, crying “Howdy yella belly, hey yella belly, hi yella belly..”. The green Skittle coughs and points to the other cowboy’s yellow belly to which he replies “Oh”.
A gunshot style endline spelling out ‘Skittles’, invites consumers to “Taste the colour” and drives them to the website www.goskittleyourself.co.uk
The ads were created by Stine Hole and Marie Ronn, Erik Tell and Marie Voss and Miles Stubbs and Saskia Green at TBWA\LONDON. Media planning and buying was through Mediacom.
